Pulau Sibuan

I was on an official assignment to Pulau Sibuan in Semporna last Friday.

Kinabalu

The island

Composition - testing the tilting LCD

White sandy beach

Almost at the end

As we were touring the beach a villager approached us (there were 3 of us, the Sabah Parks' Director, Mr. Paul basintal, Sabah Parks (Semporna) officer Mr. Asdari Delout and myself) and queried on our presence. As we were talking, we were surprised because the villager which approached us actually hails from Kg. Mengkabong waaaaaaaay back in Tuaran! Apparently his wife is from the island whom happens to work in Tuaran. But I was also made to understand that these people, "pelau", "Palaut" are nomadic people and they will move from one island to another if they sense that their well being are being threatened or the surrounding resources are getting scarce. In this case, it could be the former because once the Sabah Park's sub-station is operational, they could no longer enjoy the 'freedom' to harvest the ocean especially it was noticed that there were traces of 'giant clams' shells nearby..

It was an enjoyable trip and should the project entered 'construction stage' I might be going again on a monthly basis (yayy!) and maybe, just maybe got the chance to tour the rest of the marvelous island marine parks nearby (there are 8 islands!)

Born & Bred - Answered

In my not so distant entry, I blogged about the phrase "She sweeps the floor everyday". Today, my dear friend, Diane had given her words of wisdom, it goes like this:

Hey Hawk! I've got the perfect explanation. I took this straight from the internet. It's what lazy teachers do. Taken from www.eslgold.com/grammar/everyday.html {sorry Diane, too lazy to omit this phrase}

Explanation

Everyday is an adjective meaning "daily."

Every day is a time expression meaning "each day" or "regularly."

Examples

Note the difference in the following sentences:

1. Jane goes to class every day (each day)

2. Jane has an everyday class. (a daily class)

Common Errors

The most common error is writing "every day" as one word (everyday) as in the following sentences:

1. I used to jog three miles everyday (Incorrect)

2. I used to jog three miles every day. (Correct)

Of course, this is how I would sum it up:

Min Anne has an everyday pair of shoes.

(Note where it's placed in the sentence! Everyday is the adjective to describe what follows next--the noun phrase "pair of shoes") i.e. Adjectives describe Nouns.

Every day, every single day, Min Anne hugs her Daddy.

Min Anne hugs her Daddy every day, every single day.

(See? Every_day shows 'habit', 'routine'--when you mean the action 'hugs' to be 'regularly' or 'daily'.)

This is how to test whether you're using 'everyday/ every day' correctly:

1) She sweeps the floor everyday.

Now replace the word 'day' with an actual day, e.g 'Monday'.

She sweeps the floor everyMonday.

Note how wrong that looks. So...

2) She sweeps the floor every day.

Now replace the word 'day' with an actual day, e.g. 'Monday'.

She sweeps the floor every Monday.

Your grammatical instinct will tingle at the correctness of that! So, ta-da! Hope that helps! Print this out for your friend--and err...hope things work out with that teacher and the parent. :) Apparently, the teacher got it right. How surprising! Yes, I'm being ironic.
